Getting all your nutrients is not as easy when you realize that life can be very busy. It is because of that that a lot of people are now taking multivitamins. While the decision to take the extra nutrients in the form of multivitamins is a wise one, not every product will have all the things that you need. If you are not sure about which multivitamins to take then you need to pay attention, because the one that you may be taking may be a waste of time and money. So how do you know what to look for when you are purchasing multivitamins?
Read Labels
The term multivitamins means that you are getting several vitamins in one single product, but that does not mean that you are getting all the vitamins that you need. A lot of these products are low on B complex vitamins and some minerals. The pills get bigger the more nutrition they have and that may be the reason some minerals are taken away, but you still need that nutrition. If you are not getting the vitamins and minerals that you need from a single product then you will need to get them from your food supply or from other supplements in the market. According to FitDay, some of the nutrients that get mostly left out of multivitamins are Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Calcium and Fiber.
Size Matters
Take a look at your multivitamins and you will soon know if they have all the nutrition that you need. If your pill is small and easy to swallow then chances are that they do not have the nutrients that you need. The problem is that when a pill is too small there is no room to include the nutrients. It may be an easy product to take, but easy and comfortable is not always better, especially when it comes to multivitamins. Even when the pill is big, it makes sense to read the label as they may be missing something that you need in your diet.
Will You Lose Nutrients?
Some nutrients which come in multivitamins are hard to get from your diet when you do not like a certain group of foods. That is what multivitamins and nutrition products are there for; to complete your diet when you do not get everything from it. It is worth noting however that some nutrients, particularly the water soluble ones, will simply be lost after intake. That does not mean that there is no use in taking them, but rather that you would get a bigger benefit if you were to get your nutrients from your food as opposed to once a day from a multivitamin.
Not Useless
Back in 2009 a study claimed that there was "convincing evidence that multivitamin use has little or no influence on the risk of common cancers, cardiovascular disease, or total mortality in postmenopausal women.", but according to the Linus Pauling Institute in the University of Oregon, that information must be taken with a grain of salt. The study was simply observational and not a controlled trial. The fact is that the 41.5% of women in the study took multivitamins and those women were healthier. Multivitamins are actually important, especially for those people who know they are missing nutrients from their regular diet.
